Mariemont Board of Education of Athletic Department Philosophy
The Mariemont City Schools Board of Education recognizes the value of extracurricular activities in the educational process and the values that young people develop when they have the opportunity to participate in an organized activity outside of the traditional classroom.
Participants and responsible adults involved in Board approved activities are expected to demonstrate the same level of responsibility and behavior at practice and competitions as is expected in the classroom. The Board further encourages the development and promotion of sportsmanship, integrity, and ethics in all phases of the educational process and in all segments of the community, including administrators, participants, adult supervisors, parents, fans, spirit groups and booster groups.
Philosophy
Interscholastic athletics is an extension of the classroom promoting character, hard work, and discipline while helping to develop a person both body and mind. Athletics will provide a foundation for growth, goal setting, competitiveness, cooperation, teamwork, and adjustments to adversity and respect. Our department motto, be better, signifies our desire to assist our athletes in improving every day: in the classroom, on the courts and fields of their competitions, in their personal relationships, and in their every day activities.
Academics and Athletics
The guiding principle of the athletic program shall be the promotion of the general welfare of all students, both academically and athletically. The athletic program is a part of the educational process of the school system and is an extension of the classroom, serving as a laboratory for learning. We strive to have every student-athlete enjoy a positive experience in our program.
Interscholastic athletics are provided with the belief that the following objectives may be accomplished through membership on the interscholastic team:
- Moral development and training
- Good sportsmanship and fair competition
- Teamwork, cooperation, confidence, and self-discipline
- Good physical, mental and emotional health
- School spirit and loyalty
- Social skills development and respect for others
- Development of emotional maturity
- Opportunities to participate and succeed.
The success of our program is not based solely on the win/loss record of the teams. Our success is making sure each student has the opportunity to reach his/her maximum potential on and off the field of competition.
